This CVNA case study examines Carvana’s Q3 2026 earnings results, bullish post-earnings momentum (PEM) setup, and technical price action. Despite mixed fundamentals and no confirmed hourly, 4-hour, or daily breakouts, CVNA’s initial +9.43% earnings candle led to a +6.75% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and a +5.26% next-day EOD gain. We’ll also explore how using the 6-9-12 EMA cloud to identify a better entry could have increased the EOD return to approximately +7.18%, illustrating how small adjustments to entry timing can improve trading performance.

CVNA hourly candlestick chart showing a standard post-earnings momentum entry near $64.81 and a potential improved entry around $63.65 during a pullback to the 6-9-12 EMA cloud. The chart highlights how waiting for the EMA retest could have increased maximum favorable excursion from 5.25% to 7.18%.

Not every successful post-earnings momentum (PEM) setup needs to deliver double-digit returns. Sometimes, a relatively ordinary setup produces a clean, profitable trade while revealing small opportunities to improve the trading process.

That’s exactly what happened with Carvana (CVNA) following its Q3 2026 earnings announcement on October 28.

Carvana operates an online platform for buying, selling, financing, and delivering used vehicles throughout the United States. The company has also staged one of the stock market’s more remarkable recoveries in recent years.

At the beginning of 2023, CVNA traded as low as approximately $0.70 per share on a split-adjusted basis.

CVNA weekly stock chart showing Carvana's recovery from its January 2023 low of approximately $0.70 to $68.30 in October 2026, representing a 9,782% gain, with annotated price levels and trading volume.

Less than four years later, the stock has appreciated by roughly 9,782%, supported by substantial revenue growth, improving profitability, and a dramatic business turnaround.

Its latest earnings reaction provided another interesting example of positive post-earnings momentum.

The stock advanced more than 9% during its initial hourly earnings candle, ultimately producing a +5.26% next-day end-of-day (EOD) gain using my standard PEM entry parameters.

However, as we explore in the following case study, a slightly more patient entry near the 6-9-12 exponential moving average (EMA) cloud could have improved that return.

CVNA Earnings Results & Fundamentals

Carvana reported its Q3 2026 financial results after the market closed on October 28, delivering a mostly positive quarter with one small, but notable disappointment: earnings per share or EPS fell short of Wall Street expectations.

Fundamentally, this was still a strong report. Carvana generated record quarterly revenue, expanded vehicle sales, and achieved record adjusted EBITDA.

Management also maintained a positive outlook, expecting full-year adjusted EBITDA toward the upper end of its previously communicated range.

Carvana Q3 2026 Earnings Results

Strong revenue growth, record adjusted EBITDA, and a positive full-year outlook were partially offset by an earnings-per-share miss.

Financial Metric Q3 2026 Result
Earnings per share $0.39 vs. $0.44 expected
EPS surprise -11.4% ▼
Revenue $8.04 billion
Revenue surprise +4.8% ▲
Revenue growth YoY +42% ▲
Retail vehicle sales 217,385 (+39% YoY)
Adjusted EBITDA $800 million
FY2026 adjusted EBITDA outlook Higher end of $2.7B-$3.0B
PTJ Takeaway: Carvana’s fundamentals painted a mixed picture, but buyers focused on the positives. Despite the EPS miss, CVNA’s first hourly earnings candle advanced approximately +9.43%, establishing a bullish post-earnings momentum setup.

However, the EPS miss complicated the picture. Despite impressive revenue growth and improving profitability, Carvana failed to meet analysts’ bottom-line expectations.

That created a somewhat mixed fundamental signal. But interestingly, the initial price action still told a much more bullish story.

CVNA’s first hourly earnings candle climbed approximately 9.43%, suggesting buyers were willing to look beyond the earnings disappointment and focus on the company’s broader growth trajectory.

CVNA PEM Technical Analysis

Following the earnings announcement, CVNA established a bullish post-earnings momentum setup, although it lacked several technical characteristics that might normally suggest stronger continuation potential.

The setup started with a +9.43% hourly momentum candle, with a -3.33% upper wick retracement and a -1.29% lower wick retracement. After the close of the hourly earnings candle, CVNA pulled back and moved about -3.6% lower, but then consolidated and held above the 6-9-12 EMA cloud.

Here’s a better look at the full technical analysis and setup characteristics for CVNA.

CVNA Post-Earnings Momentum Setup

Bullish PEM setup | October 28-29, 2026

Setup direction Bullish (PEM Up)
Hourly / 4-hour / daily breakouts None confirmed
Wick structure Long upper / medium lower
Next-day continuation Yes
+9% profit target reached No
PTJ Takeaway: Despite having no confirmed hourly, 4-hour, or daily breakout, CVNA delivered a +5.26% EOD gain. A simple example of profitable post-earnings momentum without an extraordinary price move.

While the setup looked like an ideal long and provided several positive indications of continuation, the lack of confirmed breakouts across all three timeframes was particularly notable.

Despite scoring zero on our breakout criteria, CVNA maintained enough upward momentum to finish the following trading session comfortably above its hypothetical entry price.

CVNA hourly candlestick chart showing a bullish post-earnings momentum setup following its October 2026 earnings report. Entering at the close of the first hourly earnings candle produced a maximum favorable excursion (MFE) of +6.75% and a next-day end-of-day gain of +5.26%, despite no confirmed technical breakouts.

The setup was far from perfect. There was some adverse price movement along the way, and the stock never achieved a 9% profit target. But nevertheless, buyers ultimately maintained control, and the trade finished with a respectable gain.

CVNA went on to produce a +6.75% MFE and a 5.25% EOD gain, which are not massively positive results by PEM standards.

But for a strategy built around identifying momentum following earnings announcements, this is a just a great example of a relatively simple PEM setup doing exactly what it was supposed to do.

MFE +6.75%
MAE -3.49%
EOD Gain +5.26%

The Takeaway – How I Should Have Traded CVNA’s PEM Setup

My standard PEM trading strategy involves entering at the close of the first hourly earnings candle and exiting at the close of the following trading session, with a catastrophic stop-loss of −15%.

In CVNA’s case, this would have meant entering a long position at approximately $64.81, producing a respectable +5.25% EOD gain. Not a massive winner, but certainly a profitable setup.

However, looking back at the chart, waiting for a slight price retracement toward the 6-9-12 EMA cloud could have provided a better entry around $63.65.

That would have increased the EOD return to approximately +7.18%, an improvement of 1.93 percentage points.

That might not seem like much on a single trade, but small improvements can add up significantly over hundreds or thousands of trades. This is one of the main reasons I document PEM setups: to identify opportunities to refine an already profitable trading process.

Of course, waiting for a better entry also carries the risk of missing the trade entirely if the pullback never happens.

Nevertheless, CVNA provides a useful example of how a little patience can sometimes turn a good trade into a slightly better one.

Conclusion

CVNA wasn’t an extraordinary post-earnings winner, but it didn’t need to be.

A relatively straightforward momentum setup delivered a profitable result despite mixed earnings fundamentals and an absence of significant technical breakouts.

The more valuable takeaway, however, is that profitable trading strategies can still be improved. Sometimes, that improvement isn’t about finding bigger winners. It’s simply about getting a slightly better price.

And over enough trades, those small differences can matter.
