This RDDT case study examines how disappointing forward revenue guidance overshadowed Reddit’s impressive Q3 2026 earnings growth, triggering a sharp post-earnings sell-off. Despite revenue growth of 53% and EPS growth of 75%, RDDT plunged 17.55% during its first hourly earnings candle. Our technical analysis explores the bearish post-earnings momentum (PEM) setup, confirmed breakdowns across the hourly, 4-hour, and daily timeframes, and a hypothetical short trade that produced a +17.55% maximum favorable excursion (MFE), −1.16% maximum adverse excursion (MAE), and +15.13% next-day EOD gain.

Strong earnings growth doesn’t always translate into a rising stock price. Sometimes, disappointing forward guidance is enough to overshadow an otherwise impressive quarter.
That’s exactly what happened with Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) following its Q3 2026 earnings announcement on October 29.
Despite reporting substantial year-over-year revenue and earnings growth, Reddit issued fourth-quarter revenue guidance below Wall Street’s expectations.
Combined with a broader technology-sector sell-off, the disappointing outlook likely contributed to a sharp intraday decline in RDDT shares.
For post-earnings momentum (PEM) traders, however, the sell-off created an exceptionally clean bearish setup that ultimately produced a +15.13% next-day EOD gain from a hypothetical short position.

Reddit’s third-quarter earnings were impressive in several respects. Revenue increased 53% year-over-year, while diluted earnings per share climbed 75%.
On paper, these were strong financial results. Reddit beat consensus EPS and revenue estimates, reported substantial profitability growth, and continued expanding its advertising business.
Reddit Q3 2026 Earnings Results
| Financial Metric | Q3 2026 Result |
|---|---|
| Earnings per share | $1.40 vs. $1.31 consensus |
| EPS growth YoY | +75% |
| EPS vs. whisper estimate | -7.3% |
| Revenue | $894.96 million |
| Revenue surprise | +1.0% |
| Revenue growth YoY | +53% |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $402 million (+70% YoY) |
| Q4 revenue guidance | $1.00B-$1.03B vs. $1.05B expected |
However, the biggest disappointment came from its forward revenue guidance.
Management projected Q4 revenue between $1.00 billion and $1.03 billion, approximately 3.4% below analysts’ $1.05 billion consensus at the midpoint.
These disappointments may have been particularly difficult for investors to overlook during an already weak trading environment. On October 30, technology stocks experienced another broad sell-off, with the Nasdaq Composite recording its largest daily decline since June 2026.
The result was a perfect example of how traders can prioritize future growth expectations over impressive historical financial results.

Following its after-market earnings announcement, RDDT experienced an aggressive bearish reaction. The first hourly earnings candle plunged −17.55%, immediately establishing a bearish post-earnings momentum setup.

Unlike some PEM setups that lack technical confirmation, RDDT produced bearish breakdowns across all three timeframes we track.
| Setup direction | Bearish (PEM Down) |
| Hourly breakout | Yes |
| 4-hour breakout | Yes |
| Daily breakout | Yes |
| Wick structure | Very short upper wick, short lower wick |
The combination of a massive initial bearish candle, minimal upper wick, and confirmed breakdowns across the hourly, 4-hour, and daily timeframes suggested substantial selling pressure.
More importantly, the selling continued into the following trading session.

Entering a short position at the close of the hourly earnings candle, around $108, and exiting at the following session’s close near $92 would have produced approximately +15.13% in gains.
The setup also experienced remarkably little adverse movement, with a maximum adverse excursion of just −1.16%.
In other words, this wasn’t simply a large earnings gap followed by an immediate recovery. Sellers maintained control, and the stock continued trending lower throughout the following session.
For PEM traders, RDDT was an excellent example of a clean, multi-timeframe bearish setup with strong next-day continuation.

RDDT’s Q3 2026 results demonstrate an important reality of earnings trading: strong historical growth doesn’t guarantee a positive market reaction.
Despite substantial improvements in revenue and profitability, disappointing forward guidance and broader market weakness coincided with an aggressive sell-off.
For our PEM strategy, the outcome was straightforward: a 17.55% initial decline, three confirmed technical breakdowns, and a +15.13% next-day EOD gain from the standard short-entry model.
Sometimes, what matters most isn’t how well a company performed last quarter, but what investors expect from the next one.
