Reddit (RDDT) reported 61.10% year-over-year revenue growth, an 8.04% revenue beat, and bullish forward guidance above Wall Street expectations. Yet despite those bullish fundamentals, the stock plunged 8.05% during the first hourly earnings candle, creating a 17.55% maximum favorable excursion for short sellers before reversing sharply. But then, just two trading days later, RDDT had rallied nearly 20% from its post-earnings intraday low, demonstrating how one earnings report can create both an exceptional momentum short and an outstanding longer-term buying opportunity.

This RDDT case study demonstrates one of the most important lessons I’ve learned while studying post-earnings momentum:
The first market reaction isn’t always the market’s final opinion.
Reddit reported what most investors would consider an outstanding quarter.
Revenue grew more than 61% year over year, beat Wall Street expectations by over 8%, and management raised guidance for the following quarter. The company’s long-term outlook, including its growing AI monetization opportunity, remained exceptionally strong.
Yet despite those bullish fundamentals, sellers immediately took control.
RDDT fell -8.05% during the first hourly earnings candle, creating an excellent bearish momentum trade that continued throughout the following trading session.
Ironically, that same selloff also created a great buying opportunity for longer-term swing traders and investors.
Just two trading days later, Reddit has rallied nearly 20% from its post-earnings intraday low, rewarding investors who looked beyond the initial panic and focused on the company’s long-term fundamentals.
Below, we’ll examine how one earnings report produced two completely different winning trades depending on your timeframe.
RDDT Earnings & Fundamentals
At first glance, Reddit’s earnings report looked excellent.
- EPS: $1.25 vs. $1.26 Earnings Whisper (-0.79% miss)
- Revenue: $804.9 million
- Revenue Surprise: +8.04%
- Revenue Growth: +61.10% year over year
- Guidance: Q3 revenue of $860 million to $870 million, comfortably above Wall Street expectations.
Although the company technically missed Earnings Whisper by less than one percent, virtually every other earnings metric pointed toward a business continuing to execute at an exceptionally high level.
- Revenue significantly exceeded analyst expectations.
- Growth remained extraordinary.
- Management projected another strong quarter ahead.

CEO Steve Huffman also reinforced Reddit’s long-term vision, emphasizing that as the internet becomes increasingly automated through artificial intelligence, authentic human conversations become even more valuable—a narrative that continues to support Reddit’s long-term monetization potential.
Fundamentally, there wasn’t much to dislike. If anything, this looked like one of the strongest earnings reports of the season.
But then one must ask…
Why Did Reddit Sell Off?
That’s what made the initial reaction so interesting. Despite the fundamentally bullish report, RDDT immediately sold off after earnings.
The first hourly earnings candle closed down 8.05%, confirming a bearish momentum setup despite the overwhelmingly positive fundamentals.
For many traders, this kind of price action can feel confusing.
How can a company beat revenue estimates, raise guidance, and still trade sharply lower?
The answer is that stocks don’t simply react to earnings—they react to expectations, positioning, valuation, and short-term order flow.
Sometimes an excellent earnings report still attracts profit-taking. Sometimes expectations had quietly become even higher than analysts realized. And sometimes the market simply needs time to fully digest new information.
Whatever the reason, one thing was immediately clear:
The market was bearish in the short term.
And momentum traders should respect that.

RDDT Technical Setup
From a technical perspective, Reddit produced a textbook bearish momentum setup.
- First Hour Earnings Candle: -8.05%
- Hourly Breakdown: Yes
- 4-Hour Breakdown: No
- Daily Breakdown: No
Although the higher timeframes remained intact, the first hourly candle showed decisive selling pressure. That breakdown immediately created an attractive short opportunity.
From the close of the hourly earnings candle, this setup produced:
- Maximum Favorable Excursion: +17.55%
- Maximum Adverse Excursion: 0.00%
- 9% Profit Target Hit Before 5% Stop: Yes
- Change From Hourly Close to Next-Day Close: -14.23%

Unlike many earnings reversals, however, this trade eventually offered something even more interesting.
Rather than continuing lower indefinitely, Reddit eventually retraced back into the 6-9-12 EMA Cloud, providing a much cleaner risk-to-reward entry for intraday short traders.
As I’ve discussed throughout several recent case studies, retracements into the 6-9-12 EMA Cloud often provide ideal entries while allowing traders to define risk more effectively than simply chasing momentum.

RDDT became another example of that principle.
RDDT Outcome – Two Winning Trades
From a short-term trading perspective, Reddit worked beautifully. The initial breakdown continued lower almost immediately.
Momentum traders who respected the first hourly breakdown were rewarded with a clean downside trend and virtually no adverse movement from the hourly close.
By almost every measure, this qualified as an excellent bearish momentum setup.
But unlike many of the bearish case studies in my dataset, the story didn’t end there.
When you look back and analyze both the fundamentals and technicals of this trade, it becomes clear that, despite the short-term break of support, RDDT still offers a lot in terms of bullish potential.

So, in hindsight, it’s not surprising that the market eventually corrected itself. Within just two trading days, Reddit had rallied nearly 20% from its post-earnings intraday low.
Ultimately, the initial selloff appears to have been driven far more by short-term market dynamics than by any meaningful deterioration in Reddit’s business.
The fundamentals never stopped being bullish. Revenue still beat expectations. Growth was still above 60%. Guidance was still raised. The company’s long-term AI opportunity hadn’t changed.
The only thing that changed was investor perception.
Once the initial wave of selling subsided, buyers stepped back in and began pricing the company based on what had actually been reported rather than how the stock initially reacted.
This illustrates an important distinction:
The bearish momentum trade was absolutely real. But so was the longer-term bullish thesis.
Both were correct.
They simply existed on different timeframes.

Important Takeaways
- Excellent earnings don’t always produce an immediate rally. Reddit delivered exceptional revenue growth, beat revenue expectations, and raised guidance, yet still sold off sharply after earnings.
- Trade the chart—not your opinion. Regardless of how bullish the earnings report looked, the first hourly breakdown created a high-probability short setup that deserved respect.
- Timeframe determines your trade. The same earnings report produced both an excellent bearish momentum trade and an attractive longer-term buying opportunity.
- Strong fundamentals often reassert themselves over time. Just two trading days after the selloff, Reddit had already rallied nearly 20% from its post-earnings low as investors refocused on the company’s long-term outlook.
- The 6-9-12 EMA Cloud continues to prove valuable. Rather than chasing the initial rebound, traders who waited for the retracement into the EMA Cloud were presented with a cleaner long entry and a more favorable risk-to-reward profile.
Final Thoughts – RDDT Case Study
Reddit perfectly illustrates why earnings trading isn’t simply about deciding whether a report is “good” or “bad.”
It’s about analyzing what the market is doing right now, despite what any headline might make you think.
The market initially rewarded short sellers. But then, only two trading days later, buyers stepped back in and drove the stock nearly 20% higher from its post-earnings low.
The lesson isn’t that the market was wrong. The lesson is that different timeframes can produce different truths.
Recognizing the difference between those two opportunities—and knowing which timeframe you’re trading—is one of the most valuable skills an earnings trader can develop.
