In this RNG case study, we examine how RingCentral’s seemingly perfect post-earnings momentum setup, featuring a +13.60% opening earnings candle, positive fundamentals, and a 3-out-of-3 breakout score, ultimately reversed into a -7.43% end-of-day loss. Through technical analysis, earnings results, and broader market conditions, we’ll explore why even the strongest setups can fail, how a shooting-star reversal signaled the breakdown, and how traders could have identified a potential 8% short-selling opportunity.

RingCentral Inc. (NYSE: RNG) is a cloud communications and software-as-a-service (SaaS) company providing business phone systems, messaging, video conferencing, contact center solutions, and AI-powered customer engagement tools.
With a market capitalization of approximately $6.63 billion, RingCentral operates in the information technology sector, generating most of its revenue through recurring subscriptions.
On October 22, 2026, RingCentral reported encouraging third-quarter earnings, including higher revenue, improving profitability, and stronger full-year guidance.
The market initially reacted enthusiastically, producing a +13.60% opening hourly earnings candle. By virtually every technical and fundamental measure included in my post-earnings momentum research, RNG appeared to be an exceptionally promising setup.
However, the following trading session told a different story. Despite reaching a +8.50% maximum favorable excursion (MFE), RNG reversed sharply and finished with a -7.43% end-of-day return under our standard trading methodology.
While that reversal invalidated my initial long thesis, it also created an interesting short-selling opportunity, illustrating how even excellent bullish earnings setups can fail while presenting opportunities for traders willing to adapt.

RingCentral released its third-quarter 2026 financial results after the market closed on October 22, reporting modest earnings and revenue beats alongside improving profitability.
RNG Q3 2026 Earnings Results
Quarter ended September 2026
RingCentral’s results reflected continued revenue growth, expanding operating margins, and improving earnings.
Most notably, non-GAAP operating margins improved by approximately 1.9 percentage points year over year, demonstrating that the company was generating more operating profit relative to revenue.
The business also continued reducing debt, with gross debt declining to approximately $1 billion.
These developments provided a reasonable fundamental basis for the initial bullish earnings reaction.

Looking ahead, RingCentral projected fourth-quarter revenue of $673 million to $680 million, compared with a consensus estimate of approximately $672.3 million.
The company also forecast non-GAAP earnings of $1.32 to $1.37 per share, placing the midpoint almost exactly in line with the $1.35 consensus estimate.

RingCentral’s profitability and financial outlook
RingCentral also raised its full-year outlook for revenue, profitability, and free cash flow.
The fundamentals were generally supportive of a bullish earnings reaction. Revenue exceeded expectations, margins improved, and management raised several important financial projections.
Nevertheless, as RNG would soon demonstrate, even encouraging earnings and strong technical confirmation cannot guarantee continued buying pressure.

Following its October 22 earnings announcement, RNG produced one of the strongest initial technical setups in our recent post-earnings momentum research.
The stock’s first hourly earnings candle gained +13.60%, comfortably exceeding the 5% threshold frequently used in our research to identify significant initial momentum reactions.

The +13.60% Hourly Earnings Candle
The opening earnings candle displayed several characteristics associated with strong bullish momentum. Its upper wick retracement was approximately -3.27%, while its lower wick retracement measured just -1.90%.
Although some volatility occurred within the candle, the stock retained most of its substantial opening gain. More importantly, RNG confirmed bullish breakouts across all three technical timeframes:
RNG Post-Earnings Technical Setup
| Technical Variable | RNG Result |
|---|---|
| Opening Hourly Earnings Candle | +13.60% |
| Hourly Breakout | Yes |
| Four-Hour Breakout | Yes |
| Daily Breakout | Yes |
| Breakout Score | 3 out of 3 |
| Earnings Fundamentals | Positive |
| Initial Price Continuation | Yes |
| Following Trading Session | Reversed |
Our previous research has found that hourly and four-hour breakout alignment generally produces stronger post-earnings momentum results than hourly breakouts alone.
RNG offered that alignment, along with daily breakout confirmation and encouraging fundamentals.
On paper, this was precisely the type of post-earnings momentum opportunity our methodology attempts to identify.

Strong Premarket Momentum, Followed by a Sharp Reversal
Initially, RNG behaved much as a momentum trader would hope.
Throughout after-hours and premarket trading, the stock largely respected its upward-trending 6-, 9-, and 12-period exponential moving averages (EMAs), consolidating above the original earnings breakout.
The following morning, RNG continued higher, producing an opening drive of approximately +9.38% from the 9 a.m. hourly candle’s opening price to the session high.
However, that initial strength proved temporary…

Selling pressure overwhelmed the opening advance, transforming the candle into a bearish shooting-star formation characterized by a substantial upper wick and a much weaker close.
The stock subsequently broke below the opening range and its short-term EMA cloud, undermining the original bullish thesis. Rather than recovering, RNG continued declining throughout the trading session.
The shooting-star reversal, opening-range breakdown, and loss of EMA support provided clear technical evidence that the initial bullish momentum had failed.

One possible explanation for RNG’s failed breakout was the broader bearish market environment on October 23. Despite RNG’s encouraging earnings announcement, U.S. equities experienced a generally risk-off session.
The major indexes finished lower:

October 23, 2026 | Market performance
Market breadth was also weak, with approximately 37.1% of monitored stocks advancing and 58.0% declining in the supplied market snapshot. Meanwhile, only 33.8% of stocks traded above their 50-day moving averages, while 38.3% remained above their 200-day moving averages.
The broader market was contending with rising oil prices, elevated Treasury yields, inflation concerns, uncertainty surrounding AI infrastructure spending, and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
These conditions likely reduced investors’ willingness to pursue riskier momentum opportunities, particularly after substantial initial price gains.
Although we cannot definitively attribute RNG’s reversal to broader market weakness, the coincidence of a failed bullish breakout and deteriorating market breadth suggests that market conditions may have contributed to the selling pressure.
RNG Post-Earnings Momentum Trading Outcome
Using our standard methodology of entering at the close of the first hourly earnings candle and holding through the end of the following trading day, RNG produced:
RNG Post-Earnings Trading Outcomes
| Trading Metric | RNG Result |
|---|---|
| Maximum Favorable Excursion (MFE) | +8.50% |
| Maximum Adverse Excursion (MAE) | -8.40% |
| End-of-Day Return | -7.43% |
| Reached +9% Before -5% | No |
On a hypothetical $1,000 position, the stock offered as much as $85 in unrealized profit before reversing and producing a $74.30 end-of-day loss.
The reversal was particularly significant because RNG initially moved in the anticipated direction.
However, traders who failed to respond to the bearish technical developments would have watched most of the initial advance disappear.
Could Traders Have Profited From Shorting RNG’s Reversal?
Interestingly, the failure of RNG’s bullish setup created a second potential trading opportunity. We’ve seen this happen in other post-earnings momentum case studies, such as Alcoa (AA) and Affirm (AFRM).
After forming its shooting-star candle and breaking below its opening range and short-term moving averages, RNG continued declining throughout the session.

From the approximately $90 breakdown area, the stock fell toward $82.50, representing roughly 8% additional downside movement.
A trader who identified the reversal and entered a short position following the breakdown could potentially have participated in that move.
However, the 8% decline represents the subsequent price movement, not necessarily a verified executable trade return.
The important distinction is that RNG’s failure as a bullish momentum trade did not eliminate the possibility of profiting from its price action.
Instead, the invalidation of the original setup created a different opportunity for traders capable of recognizing and responding to the reversal.

View on Amazon →RNG Case Study: Conclusion & Key Takeaways
RingCentral’s October 2026 earnings reaction demonstrates why even seemingly perfect post-earnings momentum setups can fail.
The stock produced an extremely strong post-earnings momentum setup.
However, its initial +8.50% MFE ultimately deteriorated into a -7.43% end-of-day return.
The broader risk-off market environment may have contributed to the reversal, but the decisive technical warning came when RNG formed a shooting-star candle, lost its opening range, and broke below key moving averages.
The central takeaway is that even the strongest, best-looking chart setups can fail. Strong earnings, multi-timeframe breakout confirmation, and bullish premarket momentum improve a setup’s appeal but never guarantee continuation.
