In this SPOT case study, we examine how Spotify’s October 22, 2026 earnings reaction produced a +7.88% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and +6.99% end-of-day return. Through technical analysis, earnings fundamentals, and hourly breakout data, we’ll explore how a +4.96% opening earnings candle developed into a profitable post-earnings momentum opportunity, despite mixed financial results and limited multi-timeframe breakout confirmation.

Spotify Technology S.A. (NYSE: SPOT) is one of the world’s largest audio-streaming platforms, generating revenue primarily through paid recurring subscriptions and advertising across music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
With approximately 788 million monthly active users, 306 million premium subscribers, and a $120 billion market capitalization, Spotify combines the scale of an established large-cap company with the growth characteristics of a technology business.
In Q3 2026, Spotify reported a 33.0% gross margin, 13.5% operating margin, and €735 million in free cash flow. These figures demonstrate how its enormous subscriber base, recurring revenue, and improving operating efficiency can support profitability as the business expands.
For post-earnings momentum traders, however, the company’s long-term investment appeal is secondary to how its earnings announcement affects short-term price action.
Similar to our recent LRCX case study, SPOT didn’t produce an enormous post-earnings momentum gain. From the close of the hourly earnings candle to the high of day, SPOT produced a +7.88% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and a +6.99% end-of-day return.
Nevertheless, both examples illustrate how stocks across different sectors and market capitalizations can produce meaningful trading opportunities when the right earnings variables and technical conditions align.

On October 22, 2026, Spotify released its third-quarter financial results, reporting earnings and revenue that painted a somewhat mixed picture.
Although the company missed analysts’ earnings expectations, its underlying business continued expanding, with higher revenue, strong subscriber growth, and improving gross profitability.
SPOT Q3 2026 Earnings Results
Quarter ended September 2026
Despite the earnings miss, these results contained several encouraging developments.
Most importantly, Spotify’s gross margin improved by approximately 1.4 percentage points year over year, indicating that the company was generating more gross profit from each euro of revenue.
Operating income also increased alongside subscriber growth, reinforcing the argument that Spotify’s scale and recurring subscription business continue supporting profitability.
Revenue growth was another positive factor, although its relatively small surprise suggested that the earnings announcement wasn’t an overwhelming beat.
SPOT Q4 2026 Guidance: Why Did Shares Rally?
Spotify projected €5.2 billion ($5.83 billion) in Q4 2026 revenue, approximately 2.7% below the $5.99 billion consensus estimate.
However, the company’s profitability outlook remained encouraging, with gross margins expected to improve from 33.0% to 33.8% and operating income projected to increase approximately 22% sequentially to €820 million.

Management outlook following Q3 earnings
Spotify also anticipated continued subscriber growth, forecasting 316 million premium subscribers and 818 million monthly active users, increases of 10 million and 30 million, respectively, from Q3.
Despite missing EPS expectations and issuing revenue guidance below consensus, Spotify’s improving margins, subscriber growth, and operating profitability helped explain its bullish earnings reaction.
For post-earnings momentum traders, however, the most important factor was whether these fundamentals translated into sustained buying pressure and a confirmed technical breakout.

Following its October 22 earnings announcement, Spotify produced a bullish opening hourly candle that established the foundation for its post-earnings momentum trade.
The stock entered the session with an upward price reaction, but the magnitude of its opening move was relatively modest compared with some of the more explosive earnings trades included in our research.

The +4.96% Hourly Earnings Candle
Spotify’s first hourly earnings candle gained +4.96%, finishing just below the 5% threshold that I sometimes use to identify stronger initial momentum reactions.
However, the technical structure was more encouraging than the opening percentage alone suggested.
The candle established an hourly breakout, with price moving above its shorter-term trading range and beginning to separate from the exponential moving averages.
Its upper and lower wick retracements were approximately -1.62% and -1.98%, respectively, indicating some intrahour volatility without eliminating the bullish candle structure.
The initial breakout also received support from subsequent price action.
Rather than immediately reversing the earnings reaction, SPOT continued moving higher as buyers pushed the stock into the upper $570s and eventually toward $590.

SPOT’s PEM Setup – Technical Breakout Confirmation
Our post-earnings momentum dataset recorded the following technical conditions:
SPOT Post-Earnings Technical Setup
| Technical Variable | SPOT Result |
|---|---|
| First Hourly Earnings Candle | +4.96% |
| Hourly Breakout | Yes |
| Four-Hour Breakout | No |
| Daily Breakout | No |
| Breakout Score | 1 out of 3 |
| Fundamental & Technical Agreement | Mixed, mostly positive |
| Following Price Action | Continued upward |
The absence of four-hour and daily breakouts was an important limitation.
Our previous research has found that combined hourly and four-hour breakouts tend to produce stronger post-earnings momentum results than hourly breakouts alone.
SPOT therefore didn’t qualify as one of the strongest multi-timeframe setups under that framework.
Nevertheless, the hourly breakout, continued bullish candles, and supportive fundamental developments created an opportunity worth examining.

Entering at the close of SPOT’s first hourly earnings candle produced a +7.88% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and +6.99% end-of-day return, with no recorded adverse excursion during the holding period.
On a hypothetical $1,000 position, this represented $78.80 in maximum unrealized profit or $69.90 using the end-of-day exit. The latter captured approximately 88.7% of the available upside without requiring a perfectly timed exit.

SPOT Case Study – Conclusion & Key Takeaways
Spotify’s October 22, 2026 earnings reaction demonstrates that profitable post-earnings momentum trades don’t require extraordinary earnings surprises or double-digit price movements.
Despite missing EPS expectations and issuing revenue guidance below consensus, Spotify reported strong subscriber growth, improving margins, and an encouraging profitability outlook.
Technically, its +4.96% opening hourly candle and subsequent breakout produced a +7.88% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and +6.99% end-of-day return, despite lacking four-hour and daily breakout confirmation.
The key takeaway is that no single earnings variable determines whether a stock produces worthwhile momentum.
Instead, the interaction between fundamentals, technical breakouts, and sustained buying pressure creates opportunities, even among established $120 billion large-cap companies.
