Lumentum (NASDAQ: LITE) reported strong Q1 FY2027 earnings, including 136.5% revenue growth, a 3.9% EPS surprise, and Q2 guidance exceeding consensus estimates by 8.8% for revenue and 31.5% for EPS. Yet despite these bullish fundamentals, LITE shares declined 3.74% during the first hourly earnings candle before continuing sharply lower. Our bearish Post-Earnings Momentum (PEM) setup produced an 18.27% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and a 17.28% next-day EOD gain. This case study explores why fundamental strength doesn’t always translate into bullish price action and how technical signals can reveal profitable trading opportunities.

What happens when a company beats earnings expectations, raises the bar with strong guidance, and its stock STILL collapses?
That’s exactly what happened with Lumentum Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: LITE) on November 2, 2026.
Lumentum is a technology company specializing in optical and photonic products used in telecommunications, cloud infrastructure, and AI data centers. With an estimated $61.99 billion market capitalization and 8.69% short float, LITE is a major player in a rapidly expanding industry.
Despite reporting 136.5% year-over-year revenue growth, beating earnings estimates, and issuing guidance significantly above Wall Street’s expectations, LITE shares initially declined 3.74% in the first hour following earnings.
But that was only the beginning…
This case study demonstrates why strong fundamentals don’t always translate into bullish stock performance—and why technical signals sometimes tell a very different story.

On November 2, 2026, before the market opened, Lumentum reported its fiscal Q1 2027 financial results.
Fundamentally, the quarter was impressive.
Lumentum Earnings Highlights
Strong earnings growth, positive surprises, and expanding profit margins.
| Metric | Reported | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Non-GAAP EPS | $4.57 | +3.9% surprise |
| Revenue | $1.26B | +1.0% surprise |
| Revenue Growth | +136.5% | Year-over-year |
| EPS Growth | +339.4% | Year-over-year |
| Non-GAAP Gross Margin | 53.2% | Up from 39.4% YoY |
| Non-GAAP Operating Margin | 42.3% | Up from 18.7% YoY |
Now there are some good numbers here. But what’s really astounding is that revenue more than doubled from the previous year, while non-GAAP earnings per share increased more than fourfold.
The company’s AI-related optical networking business continued to demonstrate strength, with management highlighting growing demand for pump lasers and optical circuit switches.
Lumentum also announced a second major NPO/CPO design win, supported by purchase commitments exceeding $5 billion.
And perhaps most importantly, the company’s forward guidance was even stronger than analysts expected.
LITE Q2 FY2027 Guidance
Lumentum projected strong sequential growth and improving profitability for its fiscal second quarter.
Percentage comparisons use the midpoint of management’s guidance ranges versus analyst consensus estimates.
These figures painted an encouraging picture of accelerating growth and improving profitability. From a purely fundamental perspective, there was plenty for investors to celebrate.
The problem?
Wall Street sold the stock anyway.

$13.94 Listed priceLITE PEM Technical Analysis & Outcome
Despite the impressive earnings report, LITE’s initial price action told a slightly more bearish story. I say slightly bearish because the hourly earnings sell-off wasn’t huge by any means.
During the first hour after the earnings were reported, LITE closed approximately 3.74% lower.

Compared with other bearish PEM setups we’ve studied, this was a relatively modest initial move.
However, the percentage decline wasn’t the only technical signal worth watching. Leading into earnings, LITE had been trading within an upward-sloping trend, supported by a series of higher lows.

Following the announcement, however, shares began moving lower, challenging that established trend. As selling pressure intensified, the stock broke below its upward-sloping trendline.
The more important development came when price closed below the previous swing low, disrupting the pattern of higher lows that had supported the bullish trend.

In my opinion, that was the technical confirmation needed to justify a short position. While the earnings report was undeniably bullish, the price action suggested sellers had taken control.
That trendline violation and loss of the previous swing low led to an all-day sell-off. For a hypothetical short position entered at the close of the first hourly candle, the stock subsequently declined another -18.27% at its most favorable point.

Even more impressive was the recorded 0.00% MAE. That means the price never moved above our reference entry price during the measured trade window—an exceptionally clean directional move.
By the following session’s close, the hypothetical short position would still have been up 17.28%.
LITE Bearish PEM Trade Outcome
Hypothetical short entry at the close of the first hourly earnings candle, with performance measured through the following trading session.
Historical hypothetical results based on the close of the first hourly earnings candle. Returns exclude commissions, slippage, borrowing costs, and other trading expenses. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
That said, it’s worth noting that LITE did not qualify under every traditional PEM filter.
The first-hour decline was below a 5% threshold I typically look for, and the chart recorded no confirmed hourly, four-hour, or daily breakdown, which I also like to see.
Nevertheless, the trendline violation and loss of the previous swing low provided an alternative bearish technical argument.
This LITE case study just goes how a seemingly modest initial earnings reaction and contradicting signals can still develop into a much larger directional move following an earnings report.
The fundamentals were saying one thing. The chart was saying another.

Throughout our PEM research, we’ve repeatedly tested whether fundamental alignment improves trading outcomes. So far, the results have been inconclusive.
Sometimes strong earnings produce bullish momentum. Other times, companies beat expectations, raise guidance, and still experience massive sell-offs.
LITE is a perfect example.
Despite impressive earnings and guidance, the stock delivered a 17.28% EOD gain for a bearish PEM setup.
The reality is that the market doesn’t always react logically, and anything can happen.
That’s why our strategy focuses on identifying meaningful catalysts, finding repeatable technical setups, applying strict risk management, and following statistically supported trading rules.
You don’t need to predict every market reaction to be profitable. You need a repeatable edge, discipline, and enough trades to let the math do the hard work.
