IDEXX Laboratories (IDXX) delivered an impressive post-earnings momentum (PEM) opportunity on November 2, 2026, following better-than-expected earnings, revenue growth, and raised guidance. Despite an imperfect technical setup and an initial hourly gain of just 4.59%, IDXX went on to produce a 17.47% maximum favorable excursion (MFE) and a 16.80% next-day EOD gain, with only 1.78% maximum adverse excursion (MAE). This IDXX case study explores how fundamental and technical alignment created a surprisingly profitable trading opportunity without requiring traders to time the market’s exact top.

Not every profitable post-earnings momentum (PEM) trade begins with a picture-perfect technical setup. Sometimes, a relatively straightforward earnings reaction is enough to produce an exceptional trading opportunity.
That’s exactly what happened with IDEXX Laboratories (NASDAQ: IDXX) following its third-quarter 2026 post-earnings momentum setup on November 2, 2026.
IDEXX is a leading animal healthcare company specializing in veterinary diagnostics, laboratory testing, software, and related products. With an estimated market capitalization of $52.91 billion and short interest of just 2.46%, IDXX isn’t exactly a speculative small-cap stock.
Nevertheless, the company’s latest earnings report triggered an impressive bullish reaction.
IDXX initially climbed 4.59% during its first post-earnings hourly candle, before continuing higher throughout the entire trading session and closing just shy of that intraday high.
Below, we examine the earnings fundamentals, technical PEM setup, and what made this seemingly ordinary trade so profitable.

IDEXX reported its third-quarter 2026 financial results before the market opened on November 2, delivering better-than-expected earnings, revenue growth, and an improved full-year outlook.
Here’s how the company performed against Wall Street’s expectations:
The company’s underlying business performance was equally encouraging.
Companion Animal Group (CAG) Diagnostics recurring revenue increased approximately 11%, supported by higher testing volumes, expanding instrument installations, and continued demand for veterinary diagnostic services.
More importantly, management raised its full-year financial guidance.
Following its strong quarterly performance, IDEXX increased its 2026 revenue guidance to $4.741–$4.767 billion, compared with its previous forecast of $4.700–$4.745 billion. The midpoint revenue outlook increased approximately 0.67%.
Management also raised its full-year EPS guidance to $14.96–$15.16, compared with its previous forecast of $14.69–$14.94, representing an approximately 1.69% increase at the midpoint.
IDEXX Raises Full-Year Guidance
Although these revisions weren’t enormous, they reinforced the company’s positive earnings results and improving business outlook.
For PEM traders, this created a particularly interesting situation:
The fundamental story and technical price action were pointing in the same direction.
IDEXX beat earnings and revenue expectations, raised guidance, and immediately attracted bullish buying pressure. As we’ve seen in previous PEM case studies, strong fundamentals don’t always translate into higher stock prices.
This time, however, the market appeared to like what it heard from the IDXX report.

IDEXX reported earnings at approximately 6:30 AM, triggering an immediate bullish price reaction. During the first post-earnings hourly candle, shares climbed 4.59%.

This wasn’t a “huge” earnings reaction by any means. The candle also displayed relatively clean price action, with no upper wick and a modest lower-wick retracement of approximately 1.23%.
This indicated that buyers were maintaining control of the initial earnings reaction rather than immediately selling into strength.
On the other hand, the setup didn’t register a confirmed hourly, four-hour, or daily breakout, which isn’t a deal-breaker. But multi-timeframe setups often do prove to be stronger setups than those, which are not breaking out.

However, the stock subsequently pushed above its initial earnings-candle high during premarket trading, providing another indication that bullish momentum was continuing.
The broader setup also benefited from several favorable characteristics:
Four Factors Working in IDXX’s Favor
Despite an imperfect breakout setup, several fundamental and technical signals supported bullish continuation.
A substantial first-hour advance immediately following the earnings announcement.
The initial bullish candle closed at its high, with no upper-wick retracement.
Earnings and revenue beats, accompanied by upward revisions to full-year guidance.
Price moved above the initial earnings-candle high before the regular trading session opened.
The takeaway: Strong earnings, raised guidance, early buying pressure, and continued bullish momentum all pointed in the same direction.
And as the session unfolded, the momentum became substantially more impressive. Rather than experiencing a sharp reversal after its initial move, the stock established a sustained bullish trend.
Its intraday performance was especially noteworthy considering the company’s size and relatively modest short interest. Measured from the close of the initial hourly earnings candle, the setup recorded the following results:
The more interesting figure might actually be the maximum adverse excursion.
Despite advancing 17.47% from the hypothetical entry, IDXX moved only 1.78% against that entry during the measured holding period.
That’s an exceptionally favorable relationship between potential reward and adverse price movement. Even more remarkably, the stock finished the session only slightly below its maximum favorable excursion.
From the close of the hourly earnings candle to the EOD, IDXX produced an EOD gain of approximately 16.8% with a total MFE of 17.47%

Conclusion: Simple Setups Can Produce Extraordinary Results
IDXX offers another interesting example of how powerful post-earnings momentum can become.
The setup wasn’t perfect. But it still produced an outstanding trading opportunity.
The final result was a 17.47% MFE, just 1.78% MAE, and a 16.80% next-day EOD gain.
IDXX demonstrates why it’s worth tracking near-qualifying setups alongside our established rules.
Sometimes, the strongest post-earnings moves come from stocks that don’t initially look like textbook trades. Yet, the still turn into 100% bangers!
