Featured image for "I Am the Spread" showing a lone trader facing a dramatic Level II market depth screen with glowing bid and ask columns, embodying the poem’s identity crisis between fear, greed, and market obsession.

I am the fear
I am the greed
I am the red
and I am the green

I am a candle
I am the light
I am what’s wrong
and what is right

I am the trade
Volatility collapse
I am Dow futures
S&P 500 present
and past

I am the pilot
turbulence too
I am the one
I am the two

I am investment
I am margin due
I am mistake
and I am chart review

I am the bid
the ask
and the spread
I am one point
If not I am ten

If I am fear now
and then I am greed
the wound
and the wager
the consuming need—

So tell me
when the market closes

who the hell am I?
